Romans 8:33-39 NKJV
[33] Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. [34] Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. [35] Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? [36] As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” [37] No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. [38] For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, [39] neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:37 NASB
‘But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. ‘
I am so amazed and grateful that as Hebrews 4:12 says “the Word is alive and active.” As I was reading a passage and verse that I have read and spoken hundreds of times, the Holy Spirit gave me a fresh and deeper understanding of 3 simple words in the verse simply because I read it in a different translation. The message was then confirmed through a number of other verses.
So what were those 3 simple words – “more than conqueror” or “we overwhelmingly conquer.”
In the original language these 3 words are actually not the translation of only one. “hypernikáō.
We are all familiar with the prefix “hyper” which can mean over, above, beyond, superior to, more than, exceeding, abundantly. We are not as familiar with the base word “nikáō” which means “conquer.”
So, when we put them together – a super conqueror, one who is completely and overwhelmingly victorious.
That being said, as we all should know, that in our own doing and strength, there’s no way that this victory is possible.
‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of armies. Zechariah 4:6
And what does the rest of our reference verse say?
“through Him who loved us”
Jesus himself told us,
“I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Where do these super powers come from?
“but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;” Acts 1:8
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. Romans 8:11
Pause and think about that for just a minute – the SAME Spirit, that caused breath and life to return into the cold, dead body of Jesus and raised Him from death to Life is now alive and residing within every believer who calls upon the Name.
Thus we have this confidence as He has promised throughout the scriptures – He is always with us and will never leave us.
… the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”. Deuteronomy 31:6
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”. Matthew 28:18-20
So finally, if we are super heroes like I have claimed, then what are our superpowers?
By what means do we achieve this complete and overwhelming victory? Let me again let me the scriptures do the talking –
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not wage battle according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. 2 Corinthians 10:3-4
so that we confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?”. Hebrews 13:6
They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. Revelation 12:11
So let’s me summarize:
- We divinely powered weapons that are not of this world that are endued with might and strength and capable of destroying the fortresses of the evil one and his minions in the heavenlies.
- Because our war is in the heavenlies and not of the flesh, though human hands can kill and persecute this flesh, they have no power to touch our soul or spirit. This we can live “fearless” with our concern for what man thinks of us.
- Finally, our greatest weapon is declaring the power and authority that is in the shed blood of the pure and spotless lamb, JESUS and the testimony of what He has done for, in and through us.
My dear friends and family, I hope and pray that no matter where you currently find yourself that you will take just a few moments to consider and meditate on these simple words and that you will find them uplifting and encouraging. I pray that by the power of the Holy Spirit that the Lord will give you the full and complete revelation that you TRULY are a Superhero!
We may not be a part of the Avengers or Justice League, but I think we are among an even greater assembly – “The Army of the Most High God.”
